Read Roald Dahl rewrites: edited language in books criticised as ‘absurd censorship’ by Guardian staff reporter

I’m sure there is a balance yet to be found but having read some older books to my children some of the language is “awkward” to say the least. Stuff like East Asian characters described as having “yellow” skin. If I read that to them verbatim it results in a completely unnecessary conversation https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/feb/20/roald-dahl-books-rewrites-criticism-language-altered

High inflation and added demand mean that, in spite of ongoing savings from becoming a unitary authority, the council needs to find an extra £63 million to cover its costs for the coming year.

This seems fine.

Yesterday, I drank too much caffeine too late in the day and couldn’t get to sleep. While I couldn’t get to sleep I realised a solution to a problem I have been mulling over for about six months. Started work on it this morning and it’s going to work just fine!

In recent posts I’ve used ASCII footnotes like "^1" to indicate more information about a subject in a footnote line starting with "^1" at the bottom of the post. Both inline refs & footer notes should use Unicode superscripts like '¹' and hyperlink both ways, in contexts that support it. I have...

I thought footnotes were a massive accessibility no-no because screen readers… is that not the case?

When my Dad first told me about Detectorists, I said, “What, so it’s about a bunch of metal detectors?” And he said “No, they’re detectorists.” And I thought “OK, fine, there’s no need to be a nob about it.”

And that kind of encapsulates the genius of that show.

I work for a little not-for-profit organisation. Whenever we come into any amount of unexpected funding, I ALWAYS raise the prospect of getting a yacht just like the @massivelyop team!
