How exactly did “tad bit” enter the American English lexicon?!

Tad: a little bit; a small amount; a little; slightly

Bit: a small piece or amount of something; slightly

Drives me bananas. Although people do say “freezing cold” and “boiling hot”, though, I guess technically, some things boil at very low temperatures.
