In the future, America is a dystopian wasteland. The latest scourge is Ma-Ma, a prostitute-turned-drug pusher with a dangerous new drug and aims to take over the city. The only possibility of stopping her is an elite group of urban police called Judges, who combine the duties of judge, jury and executioner to deliver a brutal brand of swift justice. But even the top-ranking Judge, Dredd, discovers that taking down Ma-Ma isn’t as easy as it seems in this explosive adaptation of the hugely popular comic series.

Watched The Meg (2018) by an author from letterboxd.com
A deep sea submersible pilot revisits his past fears in the Mariana Trench, and accidentally unleashes the seventy foot ancestor of the Great White Shark believed to be extinct.

Once again I fine myself wondering, “if a film achieves everything it sets out to, what is there to criticise”?

Watched The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (2015) by an author from letterboxd.com
As the war between the Capitol and the districts reaches its peak, Katniss Everdeen embarks on a perilous mission to liberate Panem and confront President Snow. Joined by a team of trusted allies, she navigates deadly traps, shifting loyalties, and the heavy cost of rebellion, determined to bring freedom to her people and end the Hunger Games once and for all.

Considering it’s the finale, it’s kind of flat. There’s a grim and grinding inevitability that makes it feel more like a chore. Maybe that’s the source material, though.

Watched Ring (1998) by an author from letterboxd.com
A mysterious video has been linked to a number of deaths, and when an inquisitive journalist finds the tape and views it herself, she sets in motion a chain of events that puts her own life in danger.

Wanted to watch this since I was, frankly, terrified by the remake in the early 00s (I was young).

However, turns out that most of the scares only really work the first time round and the psychic flashbacks feel painfully contrived.

Oh, and it’s a very short “guh”, not a “goo”. If you’re calling it “Ringoo”, you’re a tit.

Watched Dog Soldiers (2002) by an author from letterboxd.com
A band of soldiers is dispatched to war games deep in the woods. When they stumble across a rival team slaughtered in camp, they realize they're not alone.

Fun but I can’t help thinking that a few minor edits could knock 10 mins off the running time and it’d be better for it.

Still, fantastic practical effects go a long way to make up for it!

Watched The Incredible Hulk (2008) by an author from letterboxd.com
Scientist Bruce Banner scours the planet for an antidote to the unbridled force of rage within him: the Hulk. But when the military masterminds who dream of exploiting his powers force him back to civilization, he finds himself coming face to face with a new, deadly foe.

I’ve been doing Brave New World homework with the kids, so we’ve done Falcon and Winter Soldier, and had to go back to this, which we’d previously skipped.

My 10 y/o daughter was dead against it (“I don’t like Hulk films”) but as the credits rolled she said: “That was good.” And had the grace to look a bit ashamed 😂

I’ve seen it plenty of times and, honestly, I just alternated marvelling at the adorable Liv Tyler and the size of Tim Roth’s nose.
